An Important Message from Our CEO and Directors
Trans in the City has spent several years attempting to engage with the UK Government in a positive conversation around its approach towards trans people.

We have received very little response in our efforts. In the few cases they have responded, it has often been hostile. This could not be further from the positive inclusion approach  taken by businesses of all sizes in the UK - many being active members of Trans in the City and working with us.

Trans in the City is committed to working with all parties that hold inclusion and equity for all gender diverse people as truly important, including the Government. However, it is  obvious that the Government has been working to restrict and remove trans people's rights -  evidenced yesterday by the Equality and Human Rights Commission's intervention to oppose fundamental protections for trans people.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has also condemned the UK for its endemic transphobia. Today, being a trans person in the UK is significantly worse than in most of Europe.

We would support the UK government's genuine, positive effort to celebrate positivity and progress for trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming people in this country. However, the Government is actively working against this goal and does not view trans people as having any positive role in society.

In light of this week's events, Trans in the City will not be supporting the Government's "Safe to be Me" conference this summer. We will be publicly advising all our member organisations to consider the negative portrayal of  LGBTQIA+ inclusion, and the effect on their trans and non-binary employees, that being associated with such an event will bring.

It is in no way "Safe to be Me" if you are trans, non-binary, or gender non-conforming in this country and the UK Government is actively worsening this situation.
Trans In The City 2021 Events
Trans in the City, a corporate collaboration to increase trans awareness and education in industry, has announced it, along with its members, will be running a series of online events to mark this year’s Transgender Awareness Week (TAW).

Friday, November 13: Trans in the City kick off TAW with a Founder’s Fireside Chat at 10am; Trans in the City: Young Voices – Gender, Sexuality and Discrimination then at 3.30pm.

Monday, November 16: Trans in the City & Ovo present an Introduction to Transgender with Bobbi Pickard at 12pm; MindOut and Tesco – Trans Mental Wellbeing and Transphobia at 2pm. Also at 2pm: Trans in the UK: What’s Behind the News?. Join Trans in the City and guests for a TAW panel – TeamsLive Event link.

There has been a lot of media coverage concerning transgender people in the last few years. However, the British media rarely presents the full picture, and much of the coverage is biased. Trans in the City has brought together a panel of diverse voices to give different perspectives on some of the current issues that have been affecting the transgender community in the UK: Bobbi Pickard (BP), Iesha Palmer (Mermaids), Joanne Clifton (Aviva), Leng Montgomery (ASOS) and Rebecca Tallon de Havilland (56 Dean Street).

Events on Monday, November 16 continue at 5pm with Time to be a Trans Ally with PWC; then Sammie Howard, founder of trans support group T&Coffee, is live on Trans Radio UK at 6pm.

Tuesday, November 17 at 12pm: Assimilationism – Acceptance over Authenticity… with T&Coffee founders Jason & Samantha.

In this discussion about the pressures of assimilationism on the transgender community, the hosts will talk you through the damage it can do to individuals, to the community as a whole, and present ideas which can be used to enable people of any gender identity to live with authenticity.
